Day One

041_41Begin at Amelia Court House for breakfast or lunch at one of local restaurants in the village.  Stay and shop for that unique treasure at one of our delightful antique shops. If you are lucky, one of the wonderful small town festivals will be going on, so stick around and have fun with the folks down home!

Then, travel to Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, following the “Lee’s Retreat” driving tour (Jetersville, Amelia Springs, Deatonville, Holt’s Corner, Hillsman House, Marshall’s Crossroads, Lockett House, Double Bridges).  Be sure to ask the knowledgeable rangers about those last days of the American Civil War.  The brand new Visitor Center has wonderful displays and artifacts found on the grounds – yes, 150 years later, and they are still finding artifacts!

Continue to Farmville, the county seat for Prince Edward County, still following the “Lee’s Retreat” tour. Visit High Bridge Trail State Park, a walking/biking trail that extends 30 miles through the region, but the trail’s highlight is High Bridge itself, which is just outside Farmville.  high-bridge-construction-01122012-062Stop by the Heartland Regional Visitor Center for more information on the entire region, then end the day at one of the downtown restaurants where you can relax and unwind.

OPTION – Spend night in a Farmville hotel, or at one of Twin Lakes State Park cabins.

Day Two

Wake up and have breakfast in downtown Farmville before continuing the “Lee’s Retreat” driving tour to Cumberland Church on Route 45 and then on to Appomattox.

appomattox-2010_114Visit the downtown Appomattox Visitor Information Center, where they will direct you to a unique spot for lunch.  Spend some time shopping in the many antique shops all along Main Street before getting your Civil War fix at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox and the  Appomattox  Court House National Historical Park.

OPTION – Spend the night in Appomattox before heading for home where you can unwrap your treasures and brag to all of your friends about your amazing trip!

Then, start planning your next visit to Virginia’s Heartland.
